Looking for that oh-so elusive sensation of uncontrollable giddiness you experienced while watching the films produced during the heyday of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson? Jon Knautz certainly hopes you are. His impossibly enjoyable albeit shamelessly trendy 80's throwback Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer is just the sort of unbridled free-for-all this jaded horror fan has been searching for. Pushing his finite budget beyond its limits, Knautz and long-time collaborator Trevor Matthews set out to do exactly what Raimi and Campbell did with Evil Dead II: deliver a rowdy, rambunctious gore/comedy stacked to the rafters with twisted creatures, off-the-wall action, and a seriously wicked sense of humor. However, don't let these brazen soundbites and press material-ready quips fool you -- Jack Brooks is much smarter than the glut of these empty-headed homages we've been given as of late. While others are merely mimicking the films they loved as kids, Knautz has literally tapped into the same creative wellspring which fueled such iconic pictures as Re-Animator and Dead Alive. Throw in a finely-tuned freak-out by none other than genre veteran Robert Englund and you've got the best plumber-turned-monster slayer flick I've ever seen. Jack Brooks is the real deal. There'd better be a sequel.
Recipe For Success: Knautz's Knack For Squishy Action + A Slew Of Great Monsters + Trevor Matthews Is The New Bruce Campbell
Yeah, I Said It: There have been plenty of Ash wanna-bes over the years. Matthews, on the other hand, has nailed it.
Groovy.

Been waiting to see this one! Sounds like it should be fun. And My Name is Bruce is right around the corner too.
