REVIEW: Smiley Face
When you stop for a moment to consider Gregg Araki's entire body of work as a whole, the man's bizarre 2007 marijuana comedy Smiley Face appears to be his oddest cinematic creation thus far. Though the film still retains the idiosyncratic director's obsession with losers, drug abusers, and twenty something hipsters, you'll find nary a sexual dysfunction or abhorrent homicidal tendency amongst any of them. Smiley Face is, essentially, one long, pointless THC-laced joke involving an unfortunate actresses' unexpected encounter with her roommates specially-seasoned cupcakes, an event which ultimately leads to a series of random encounters with a score of strange human beings, including John Krasinski, Adam Brody, Danny Masterson, and a score of cult and B-grade celebrities. While I happened to enjoy this goofy little picture much more than I probably should have, I'm almost positive that most viewers will see Araki's much-needed departure as a complete and utter waste of their precious time. There's no story, no depth, and absolutely no point whatsoever. However, you do get to see Scary Movie star Anna Farris prove to everyone on the planet why she's one of the funniest, most underrated actresses working in Hollywood today. Great fun for anyone who appreciates cleverly moronic humor. Be sure to bring some chips, though.
